Fresh Produce Storage Tips
I used to be afraid to buy a lot of produce because invariably they would rot in my fridge before I got to use them. It just seemed like such a waste. But I love my fresh produce so much and I do hate going to the grocery store, so I did some research (I asked my friends) and WOW, the things I learned!
My produce can last!
Now I store using these methods and I always have fresh herbs, leafy greens, berries and other yummies available to me all the time!
GREENS
From my friend Neeti
Wash the greens with water and baking soda (optional). Normally soak for 10-15 minutes.
Drip dry in a rack for 10-15 minutes
Then gently pat dry with a cloth towel and roll them in the towel. They should not be dripping with water when you roll them in the towel
Store in a fridge container or drawer. The moisture with the dish cloth or towel covering it keeps the greens fresh.
Also if greens dry out, soak in a bowl of water for 5-12 hours. They will perk up.
Always separate the root vegetables from leafy greens or the root veggies will absorb their moisture.
BERRIES
From my friend Neeti
Soak in a bowl of water with a teaspoon of baking soda.
Take out and rinse, drip dry in a colander.
Place on a flat tray in one layer onto dish towel or paper towel.
Cover with a paper towel once mostly dry and store in the fridge. It stays really well for a whole week.
POTATOES & ONIONS
From my own learning the hard way...
The gases from the onions apparently starts them sprouting!
Keep the potatoes in a dark, cool and dry space. And away from the onions.
Keep anything else that ‘sprouts’ away from the onions, unless you want to grow a little garden in your pantry...
